At eighteen, Sophia Vance leaves Missouri behind and drives across the country to Los Angeles, determined to build a new life in California.

After picking up occasional modeling work, Sophia appears in a small newspaper advertisement for a local dress shop. One afternoon, Frank Mariano happens to see her standing outside the shop, studying her own photograph in the window. Recognizing her as the young woman from the ad, he introduces himself.
